World Oyster Eating Championship

Our oyster eating contest has gone from a simple challenge at the French Quarter oyster bar to one of the most popular events sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eaters.

Each April during the French Quarter Festival the world’s most talented gluttons slurp down dozens of fresh raw oysters to earn the title of the World Oyster Eating Champion. The 2008 champ is Pat Bertoletti who ate 35 dozen in 8 minutes. Impressive, but not a record.

The world record holder is Sonya “Black Widow” Thomas who ate 46 dozen in 10 minutes in 2005. That’s 552 oysters in only 10 minutes. 55.2 oysters a minute, almost an oyster a second. That may never be beat.

And the Winner is......

Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas. She won her second Acme World Oyster Eating Championship by eating 29 dozen in 8 minutes. That may sound like she was off pace from her world record setting effort in 2005, but these oysters were some of the biggest you've ever seen. What else do you expect from Acme?
